LGBT activists have expressed fears for the future as the new equalities minister has been criticised for pushing an anti-LGBT rhetoric
“anti-woke” Tory MP Kemi BadenochThe new Prime Minister’s decision to offer senior roles to right-wing figures including Ms Badenoch and Suella Braverman, the Home Secretary, suggests that Mr Sunak is attempting to placate those on the right-wing of the party.that the appointment would be “highly divisive” and that she was now “deeply fearful for the wellbeing of LGBTQ+ people in Britain”.
On Wednesday evening, Mr Cohen posted a series of Tweets saying said Ms Badenoch’s appointment was “feared” by LGBT campaigners, noting her abstention from a vote to legalise same-sex marriage in Northern Ireland in 2019 and herWhen asked to respond to the claims in the Tweets, Ms Badenoch said: “I’m afraid that this particular individual is someone who uses Twitter as a tool for defamation. He has even been sued by the honourable member of Edinburgh West.
An Equality Hub Spokesperson said Ms Badenoch was “simply setting out that the Government will continue to pursue a compassionate approach to equality, led by evidence and data”. She said in the recording: “It’s no longer about minority rights in terms of race any more or nationality. It’s now, you know like, it’s not even about sexuality now, it’s now like the whole transgender movement, where, OK well we’ve got gay marriage, and civil partnerships, so what are transsexuals looking for?”
“Misgendering” a trans person is when someone refers to them as the gender they were assigned at birth when they identify as another gender. She received backlash for the comments after the recording was leaked in September 2021, with Labour describing them as “disgusting”.: “Everyone should be able to be themselves and be celebrated, supported and loved for who they are.
