It was set up as a way to continue his charitable work after his death - but the Captain Tom Foundation's future is now in serious doubt.
He had set out to raise £1,000 for NHS Charities Together by walking 100 laps of his Bedfordshire garden before his 100th birthday in April 2020 – but his efforts struck a chord with the nation and donations flooded in.He ended up raising more than £32m for NHS charities - a total of £38.9m after Gift Aid - and in acknowledgement of his fundraising efforts he was knighted by the Queen during a unique open air ceremony at Windsor Castle in summer 2020.
It was registered in June 2020 “as a grant-making charity, for the advancement of public health and wellbeing”, the Charity Commission said. The charity stated that its work is “entirely reliant on donations” and that while its total income had been just over £1m for the 2021 financial year, that fell to £402,854 from June 2021 to November 2022.No.
