A Government which looked rudderless finally has a game plan
So the leadership cares increasingly less about the opinion of people who are not the decisive swing voters – or who think that Sunak is showing a nastier side. For example, when asked if he admired anything about Keir Starmer ontoday, the Prime Minister simply stuck to his talking point that “you have to take a stand on things”, rather than doling out a half-hearted compliment with the wan courtesy this question usually elicits.
So expect more “stands” on reactive issues, more un-wokery and more identification with the gripes of car owners. The outer London Ulez row was not only a local spat, but a blunt sign that voters often say they desire clean air or care about the damage of climate change – and then vote contrarily when the impacts move to their wallet or inconvenience their routines.
That opens up a window of opportunity between next May and October depending on the economic outlook.
The PM’s speech will doubtless tell us to wait until the inflation demon has been slain and await news on tax cuts later. In the meantime, he needs to say something to a listless electorate. So the message will be that the Tories are the party that listens to voter concerns which others find inconvenient, disturbing or retrograde.
It’s a fine and wavering line between that and a “grievance politics” in which the Government aligns itself with the aggrieved. But Sunak has few weapons and a mighty battle if he is to make the next election less of a killing field experience for his party. Therefore, expect him to take up cudgels that come to hand and start fighting.
