6 churches to visit on the Yorkshire coast in winter
With spring still tantalisingly just around the next corner, a bracing trip to the coast will blow away any lingering winter cobwebs. This month, we’re suggesting you combine that winter walk with a visit to a glorious coastal church, all of them with stunning sea views. We start at the southernmost town of our North Yorkshire Coast in Filey, and the medievalwith its fine fishy weathervane. Its sturdy square tower was long a waymarker for mariners up and down this coast.
St Martin’s in Scarborough is a miracle of Victorian opulence, and a must-visit for anyone with even a passing interest in 19th century art At St Martin's, William Morris, Edward Burne-Jones, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Philip Webb and Ford Madox Brown contributed designs for the stained glass, including windows giving thanks for the recovery of the Prince of Wales, later Edward VIII – he contracted life-threatening typhoid on a visit to the town – and a memorial plaque to James Paul Moody, the 24-year-old Sixth Officer on the Titanic and the only junior officer to die when the ship went down on her maiden voyage in April 1912.
St Mary's Whitby - the architectural historian Nikolaus Pevsner described its crazy hodgepodge of 17th- and 18th-century box pews as ‘hard to believe and impossible not to love’. Look out, too, for the elaborate memorial to those who died in the Whitby Lifeboat Disaster of 1861. On its sixth outing to rescue those at the mercy of a huge storm, the lifeboat was hit by a huge wave and all the crew but one – the Whitby legend Henry Freeman – were drowned.
