The 'final ever' Beatles song, created by John, Paul, Ringo and George, will debut on BBC Radio 2 this afternoon
The Beatles will unveil their 'final song' today - which features all four members and has been 45 years in the making. Now And Then is sourced from a former John Lennon demo which was recorded in the late 1970s.
After the death of Lennon in 1980 aged 40, his wife Yoko Ono gave the recording to the remaining Beatles in 1994 along with Free As A Bird and Real Love, which were released by the band in the same decade. During this period, the three remaining members recorded new parts and completed a rough mix for Now And Then in 1995 with producer and musician Jeff Lynne.
McCartney said Lennon's voice was "crystal clear" and it could now be mixed properly to create a track. As revealed in the 12-minute Disney+ film Now And Then, which released yesterday , McCartney rerecorded the track's bassline and then sent the files on to Ringo so he could add the drums. We know that it features Lennon's isolated vocals from his 1977 demo, as well as a bassline from McCartney and drums from Ringo. McCartney revealed the track also features a string section - akin to previous Beatles hits like Strawberry Fields and I am The Walrus.The new song also includes a guitar solo - which McCartney said was 'a tribute to George' - which adapts some of his guitar recordings from 1985. Harrison died in November 2001 aged 58.
