The Met Office has issued yellow warnings of ‘danger to life’ as the UK braces itself for aWith 85 localised flood warnings in place across the UK, and another 203 alerts for possible flooding in England and Wales, it’s time to think about how to keep ourselves safe, whether that be flood-proofing our homes or knowing how best to drive on the roads.
Animal charity Blue Cross recommends that pets have both a microchip and an identity tag with up to date contact details on their collar, with the latter already being a legal requirement for dogs. You also need to plan your family’s escape route with your pet in mind. How exactly do you plan to get out of your house? Do you have portable pet carriers ready to pop your guinea pig in? These are all things to think about beforehand.
One thing you could do to avoid the situation completely is ask a family member or friend who is likely to be unaffected by flooding to take your pet in for a few days.Flooding can be traumatic, so it’s always worth thinking about what would comfort your pet – one top tip from the RSPCA is to keep their favourite toys dry and at hand.
