After 47 days of elections, Indians will get a new Parliament that the Bharatiya Janata Party is still expected to dominate.

Supporters hold cutouts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi during an election campaign rally in Gurdaspur, Indian, on May 24. for the lower house of Parliament, the Lok Sabha, in which almost a billion voters, from the Himalayas in the north to far flung islands in the Indian Ocean, have taken part.

As election officials trekked for miles, by foot, hoof and helicopter, to collect the votes of the most remote citizens, India’s top diplomat, S Jaishankar, called it the “largest electoral logistics exercise that this planet has ever witnessed.” The ruling party and Prime Minister Narendra Modi are vying for a third term after a decade in power. They are hoping for a mandate that surpasses their already spectacular performance in 2019, when the party took 303 of the 543 seats — far beyond the 272 needed to rule. They are hoping to maintain their stronghold in the north and make new inroads in the east and south. Results will be announced on Tuesday.
