At first, it looked like a simple but tragic accident. Fourteen months after they vanished in a snowstorm in the mountains of central Italy , the remains of Briton Jeannette May and her companion Gabriella Guerin were found in a forest ravine by a man who was hunting wild boar.
What drove this fascination was not just the manifest incompetence of the local police, but also the glamour and back story of the striking Mrs May. Now, almost exactly 44 years after she and her friend set out to go sightseeing in the countryside where Mrs May had bought a holiday home, only to be swallowed up by a blizzard and never seen alive again, prosecutors dramatically announced that they were re-opening their investigation.
For more than four decades he has had to endure not just the agony of losing his 41-year-old wife but also the morbid curiosity surrounding her disappearance. Following her divorce from de Rothschild – their marriage ended after five years in 1971 – the two remained on good terms. This contact was to prove vital in the months after her disappearance. In 1979, she and May bought a 300-year-old farmhouse near the medieval town of Sarnano, 140 miles north-east of Rome – a renovation project for the couple, who loved the area.
Quite why the two decided to make such an excursion on the evening of November 29 still remains baffling. That evening a snowstorm began – the heaviest snowfall in the region for 35 years, with drifts up to 10ft deep. This house in Schitto near Sarnano, Italy, was owned by Mr May and his wife Jeanette
The police deduced the women had sought shelter there. The tablecloth and fire were thought to have been an SOS signal. Rather than solving the mystery of their disappearance, the recovery of the bodies added to it. Was it, after all, a kidnap that had gone wrong? Meanwhile, an examination of the Peugeot found no snow under the car tyres suggesting it had not been snowing when the women parked. And dirty crockery inside the shepherd’s refuge suggested more than two people had been present.
Questions were also being asked about a robbery at Christie’s in Rome a day before they vanished. A fortnight after they left her hotel in Sarnano, a telegram arrived for Mrs May fixing an appointment in a Rome apartment which police were connecting to the stolen goods from the saleroom.
