Dominique Pélicot, 71, stands trial alongside 51 other men accused of aggravated rape of his wife, Gisèle Pélico.
A man is on trial in France for allegedly drugging his wife and inviting dozens of strangers to rape her, sparking widespread shock and outrage globally.
Dominique is accused of using a website to arrange these assaults between 2011 and 2020. The trial at Vaucluse Criminal Court is expected to last around four months, with 20 of the accused currently in custody. Gisèle has not spoken to him since his arrest nearly four years ago in November 2020. Observers noted that Gisèle commented to her lawyer, Antoine Camus, on how much Dominique had aged during his time in prison. Camus described the family as "annihilated" and "devastated."
What do we know about the family? The Pélicots lived in a large family home in the commune of Mazan, about 70 miles from Marseille, after relocating from Paris in 1991. They were regarded as a respectable retired couple with three children who frequently visited. Neighbors described them as "lovely people" who hosted parties around their swimming pool in a meticulously maintained garden, according to court testimony.
