Truss may have served under David Cameron and Theresa May, and she may enjoy cosplaying – sometimes quite literally – as Margaret Thatcher, but Boris Johnson remains the leader she is closest to, writes Marie Le Conte.
When Boris Johnson announced that he was stepping down in July, it was not obvious that Liz Truss would replace him. Former chancellor Rishi Sunak was the clear frontrunner; trade minister Penny Mordaunt and rising star Kemi Badenoch captured the media’s attention.
It probably shouldn’t have been a surprise. Truss has long been underestimated in Westminster, but she is one of the very few politicians who served as a cabinet minister under three successive governments. She is a great political survivor, and she has finally reached the top. What now? Well, probably more of the same.
