This week's trip down Vicarage Road memory lane looks back to a famous night in Manchester almost 45 years ago WatfordFC

The FA Cup has given Watford more success over the years but it was in the League Cup where many football fans first became aware of what Graham Taylor was starting to build at Vicarage Road.

Having won the Division Four title in Taylor’s first season, the Hornets kicked off the 1978/79 campaign by beating Brentford 4-0 and 3-1 to comfortably progress through to the second round of the competition. Two goals from Luther Blissett fired Watford to a 2-1 victory over Newcastle United at Vicarage Road, but few would have predicted another upset when the Hornets were drawn away to Manchester United in the third round.

Dave Sexton’s side were sitting seventh in Division One when the tie was played on October 4, 1978 and their line-up was full of internationals including Steve Coppell, Joe Jordan, Sammy McIlroy and Gordon McQueen. All looked to be going as expected at Old Trafford when Jordan gave the hosts the lead before half-time, but the Hornets had other ideas.

Soon after the interval, Blissett equalised with a fine header from a Bobby Downes cross. But even better was to follow in the 71st minute when the Watford striker rose superbly to direct a Dennis Booth delivery into the top corner. It secured one of the most memorable victories in Hornets history and remains the only time they have triumphed at Old Trafford.Enjoy looking back to that famous night with these pictures from our archive, some of which have not been published for many years.
