The inquiry chair, Senator Matt Canavan, accused Premier Daniel Andrews of running "an unprecedented protection racket" by refusing to appear at the hearings, something the premier dismissed as a "political stunt". A facilities assessment conducted for the lead consultants, Ernst and Young, warns most of the venues the Victorian government has proposed for the Games "have not been designed with major events in mind."
In the same month, the Victorian government asks the federal government to chip in $1.3 billion for the Games – half the original cost – by writing a letter to the minister for infrastructure.Kardinia Park was to host the closing ceremony but the Geelong council says a letter to the premier telling him the city couldn't afford it went unanswered.Details about funding for the Commonwealth Games are missing from both the state and federal budgets.
