Muslims worldwide will be fasting during daylight hours throughout Ramadan
Millions of Muslims across the world are about to embark on the holy month of Ramadan - a time of worship, self-sacrifice and communal gathering. Ramadan marks the ninth month of the Muslim lunar calendar and, during this time, followers of the religion refrain from eating and drinking - yes, even water- while the sun is up. After daylight hours, they break their fast with a communal meal called Iftar.
Typically, the crescent is first sighted in Saudi Arabia, the UAE and some Western nations while South Asian countries like India, Pakistan and Bangladesh spot the moon a day later. Different countries rely on moon-sighters and astronomical calculations to determine the start of Ramadan. Because Ramadan depends on the lunar calendar, it changes every year, much like Easter . Ramadan is always the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, which is fully based on the cycles of the moon.
