'I placed a bet on my phone. Just like that, I won £80 and it was the first time I’d felt good in a while.' | ✍ Steve Ramsey writes.
Twelve years ago,It was a difficult time for me – I had some personal issues and was going through a tricky career change.
It was one thing I could look forward to and gradually, it became the only thing I could think about.I gambled away all my savings and I had to get multiple credit cards and loans to keep it up. By this time, I was in a very bad place. All my energy was geared towards gambling and my health, wellbeing, and relationships with my loved ones were suffering enormously. My two young daughters felt like I wasn’t interested in spending time with them, because all I could think about was gambling, rather than paying attention to them.
Overwhelmed by guilt and feeling like I couldn’t talk to anyone in my life, I even contemplated suicide.I was terrified, but the overwhelming feeling was relief, that once everything was out in the open it could finally be addressed. I spent almost a year in prison – there was very little understanding of prisoners struggling with gambling harms.
