Hundreds of thousands of teachers across England and Wales will walk out throughout February and March unless last-ditch talks between the National Education Union and ministers result in an improved pay deal.

Unions argue that teachers’ pay has fallen by almost a quarter in real terms since 2010, and that the profession faces a recruitment and retention crisis fuelled by low salaries. Around a third of teachers are leaving the profession after five years on current pay levels, according to the NEU.
Mr Courtney emphasised that Jeremy Hunt, the Chancellor, will unveil the Budget on 15 March. It means potential teacher strikes that day could prove a major headache for the Government, as parents across the country, including MPs and ministers, scramble to organise childcare arrangements.The NEU represents teaching staff from across the education sector, including maintained schools, academies, free schools, independent schools, sixth form colleges and further education colleges.
