Today will mark the 22nd anniversary of one of America's worst terrorist attacks
The terrorist attacks are often considered one of the most severe in the United States and reverberate across the international community. The death toll reached the thousands and left a scar on American culture that can still be felt today.
Reports first began at 8.46am when an American Airlines plane crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Centre. Initially, this was believed to be an accident. The South Tower was the first to collapse from the severe fires and damage at 9.59am. It wasn't until 29 minutes later that the North Tower also collapsed.
Overall, 2,977 people died as a direct result of al-Qaeda's co-ordinated attack - not including the terrorists. This includes passengers on the three flights as well as people in the World Trade Centre towers and the Pentagon building.
