When will teachers in Greater Manchester go on strike? Full list of dates
Seven days of rolling strikes will take place in schools in England and Wales in February and March after tens of thousands of teachers voted to take action in a bitter dispute over pay and working conditions. Schools may be forced to close if they don't have enough staff to teach children safely after 90% of school staff balloted by the National Education Union in England backed walkouts.
In Greater Manchester strikes will take place on February 1, February 28 and March 15-16. Dr Mary Bousted and Kevin Courtney, Joint General Secretaries of the National Education Union, said: "We have continually raised our concerns with successive education secretaries about teacher and support staff pay and its funding in schools and colleges, but instead of seeking to resolve the issue they have sat on their hands.
He said: "It is incredibly frustrating that anti-trade union and anti-democratic legislation compelled us to conduct the ballot by post during a period in which the management of the Royal Mail refused to take action to ameliorate the disruption to the postal service. We have to conclude that our democratic process has been compromised by factors outside of our control."
The Children's Commissioner for England said she was 'disappointed' by the impact the strikes will have on children's education. Dame Rachel de Souza said: "I know the decision to strike will not have been taken lightly for any teacher, and the vote has been far from unanimous - but it comes in the wake of huge disruption from the pandemic and will add to the challenges already faced by so many pupils who are catching up on lost learning.
