The Reckoning examines how prolific offender Jimmy Savile was allowed to get away with his crimes
A year after his death at the age of 84 in 2011, the Metropolitan Police opened a major investigation namedEnglish DJ and television presenter Jimmy Savile showing off his OBE after his investiture at Buckingham Palace in 1972 The BBC drama also examines why Savile was permitted to continue his abuse “in plain sight” when rumours surrounding his conduct were so widespread.
Due to the sensitive nature of the series, it was decided that survivors should also tell their stories of their experiences with Savile. In between dramatic sequences, Darien, Sam, Susan and Kevin speak to camera about the methods Savile used to abuse and silence his victims.Jeff Pope, executive producer for ITV Studios, who made the series with fellow executive producer and writer of the series, Neil McKay, said they had been discussing making the series for nearly 10 years.
He said: “When I started in television in 1983 and worked for ITV, within a year or two I was aware of rumours about him to do with improper behaviour at Stoke Mandeville and Broadmoor. Distasteful stuff about bodies in morgues and so on, which of course stuck in my mind. “I think we wanted to make this series because, like the other pieces we’ve done over our time working together, it’s an enormous and important story. This man was abusing and assaulting hundreds of people, essentially in front of our eyes.
