Tom Parker-Bowles brands Greggs steak slice as its 'crowning glory' in taste test. The son of Queen Camilla was less enthused with the brands vegan sausage roll and its coffee, branding it 'dull'.
It’s been a good week for Greggs. Not only has the high street stalwart posted a 27 per cent increase in annual profits , but it’s also knocked McDonald’s off the British breakfast top spot, too.Cheap and convenient, with many stores opening as early as 5am and not closing till 6pm, if you wanted you could eat breakfast, lunch AND dinner in a Greggs.
What you won’t find is rare breed sausage rolls, sourdough pizza or artisan croissants. But that’s part of its appeal. There’s no stinting on the filling, although the tuna has been mushed into a slightly unpleasant paste. And I could do without the pieces of red pepper. Really, what is the point of red pepper? But I loved the raw red onion, sprinkled generously on top, and there’s a decent acidity too, from a good squeeze of lemon. The bread isn’t bad either.
Well, you certainly get bang for your buck. Three chipolatas and three wodges of omelette, all crammed into a perfectly decent baguette.
