Where the Seahawks stand on cap space as the 2024 NFL season kicks off
The start of the 2024 NFL regular season has finally arrived, with the Kansas City Chiefs hosting the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday Night Football on Thursday evening. Along with the start of the regular season comes the requirement that teams across the league move from the offseason salary cap accounting rules to the regular season cap accounting, which leads to a rapid drop in available cap space for teams.
To help explain this, when a team elevates a player from the practice squad for a game, that player is not paid the practice squad salary for the week, and is instead paid 1/18th of the league minimum for their level of experience for the week. In a practical sense, that means that while someone like tight end Tyler Mabry makes $12,500 per week on the practice squad, should he be elevated for a regular season game his pay for that week would be raised by more than $42,000.
