The White Sox were in the dark when Garrett Crochet’s trade demands came to light.
“You can imagine the White Sox’s rage considering they had not been informed of that demand until it became public,” USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reported.
“Teams who wanted to trade for Crochet .. and use him as a hybrid starter and reliever, now are having second thoughts whether they should bother acquiring him if he’s going to shut it down.”The 25-year-old already has undergone Tommy John surgery once and is under team control for two more years beyond this season, providing cost-controlled benefit to acquiring teams.
Asking for an extension, though, takes away the financial advantage of trading for a player who has yet to reach free agency. This move by Crochet’s management team, CAA, comes with some precedent, namely in 2015 when star Mets pitcher Matt Harvey and his agent Scott Boras looked to limit his innings to 180.Harvey blew past that figured as the Mets reached the World Series, ultimately hurling 215 innings. The star righty ended up undergoing Thoracic Outlet Syndrome the following year and never received the significant long-term contract extension he desired.
Still, Chicago is undoubtedly frustrated as some acquiring teams, particularly small market ones, could be attracted by Crochet’s cheap contract and now could have serious hesitancy trading a major haul of prospects with the uncertainty that he won’t pitch down the stretch.Crochet figured to have a robust trade market ahead of the deadline, including the Yankees, Mets, Dodgers, and Brewers, among others.
