After three episodes we still don't know who shot Jill Dando in 1999, but that doesn't mean this docuseries is a waste of time
This isn’t as irrelevant as it might sound, because Dando was perhaps only second to Diana as the nation’s sweetheart in the 90s. The scenes at her funeral in Weston-Super-Mare, with the thousands lining the streets throwing flowers at her passing hearse, were reminiscent of Diana’s funeral procession two years earlier.
We also hear from George’s defence barrister, the legendary human-rights lawyer Michael Mansfield, George’s sister, Michelle Diskin Bates, who campaigned tirelessly for his release, along with Dando’s brother, Nigel, her former boyfriend, ex-BBC executive Bob Wheaton, and her erstwhile agent Jon Roseman. The latter two were questioned by police as potential suspects.
Executive producer Emma Cooper has done an impressive job in securing contributors. Nigel Dando stated in a recent interview that he agreed to take part in the hope that the documentary might open fresh avenues in an investigation that has been effectively stalled since George’s release from prison in 2008.
Campbell is still adamant that George did it, Mansfield reckons that the forensic evidence points to Serbia, while a career criminal-turned-writer called Noel “Razor” Smith claims to have heard rumours that it was a crime-gang hit job. He can’t say who, he says darkly, for his own safety. Needless to say, social media has filled the vacuum with a variety of colourful theories, including the idea that Dando was murdered by a VIP paedophile ring., however, is a proper piece of journalism that sheds light on the case, even if it can provide no definitive answer.
