Five candidates have their eyes on two Dallas College board seats that are up for grabs this year. Whoever is elected will help navigate a new community college funding model that ties state dollars to student outcomes, rebound from enrollment drops and convince North Texans on the value of a degree.Five candidates have their eyes on the Dallas College board at a time when the state has raised the stakes in how it funds community colleges.
Looking to represent the larger part of south Dallas are three candidates gunning to take over longtime trustee Charletta Compton’s seat. Compton, who sat on the board for nearly 25 years, is not seeking reelection. Rodriguez, 30, who founded a nonprofit that helps Latino students in Dallas as they transition to college, wants to help “young adults thrive and make a living wage.” If elected, he said he wants to work on closing financial gaps between Black and Latino students and their white peers. He wants to improve college access and completion by leveraging partnerships with school districts, such as by ensuring students are better prepared before making the transition.
