It is, in some ways, the kind of film Hollywood doesn’t make anymore, one that has maintained its steady climb in popularity since it sold to Apple for a record $25 million at Sundance, and persistently tugs at the heartstrings of everyone who sees it. Its momentum was confirmed when it took the Producers’ Guild of America Best Picture award last week. The producers’ choice matters because it employs the same preferential ballot that the Academy uses to determine the Best Picture winner, a system that tends to favour films a lot of people like rather than ones that some feel passionately about. True,has only three nominations overall, which would mean it would have to buck a 90-year trend to take the Best Picture prize but that doesn’t mean you should bet against it.Jane Campion’s revisionist western is a superb piece of controlled, committed filmmaking. With an assured eye and a fierce sense of time and place, Campion creates a portrait of extreme masculinity, misogyny and latent homophobia that is both chilling and insightful. It’s a film that stays with you long after the credits have rolled, every character and every scene fully realised and intensely dramatic. What is not said is as powerful as what is stated. It is a huge achievement and it still might squeak the prize for Best Picture.
