Senior members of the Government are privately admitting it would be a failure not to get a deal in time for the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement for peace in April 🔴 singharj and HugoGye
In a sign of the improving mood music, during his meeting with Joe Biden this week, Mr Sunak discussed his talks with the EU over the Protocol and did not mention controversial legislation to allow UK ministers to override the deal, which is moving through Parliament and which Brussels has warned would collapse talks.
EU diplomats have also suggested that an agreement on trade arrangements that satisfies all sides was possible in weeks. But a UK source suggested the talks were complicated because the Government has little room to compromise on tough demands that the European Court of Justice no longer has sole jurisdiction over the operation of the Protocol because neither Tory Eurosceptic MPs or the Democratic Unionist Party would accept it.
