Longer days and milder temperatures frequently encourage people to spend time in their gardens. For numerous households, gardens will already be approaching peak bloom, but there's still an opportunity to implement changes or even try cultivating something new.
According to horticultural experts, June represents an optimal month for introducing additions to your outdoor area, whether that's beautiful flowers, shade-loving plants or even crops to enhance your summer dining table. The specialists at GardeningExpress have revealed their recommended choices for planting this month. They explained: "Warmer soil and longer daylight hours make June a great month to start planting plants that love the warmer climate.
Gardeners will also find that the higher temperatures mean plants establish and grow much quicker than they do when it's colder.
" Despite the recent damp conditions, planting can proceed as usual since temperatures remain steady, they noted, according to the Express. Chris Bonnett, founder of GardeningExpress, commented: "June is typically a time of year where the ground begins to warm up and we see our plants grow much faster. Although we have had some rainfall lately, the temperatures are still pretty consistent, which means gardeners will find they are able to plant most things.
"We've pulled together a list of our top picks to plant this month for those feeling unsure on what to do. Gardeners looking to grow some veg should consider carrots or cucumbers.
"These are both pretty beginner-friendly, they just need the right growing conditions and care. Other plants to grow include hebe, cosmos and marigolds.
" What to plant in June Carrots Chris advised: "Carrot seeds can be sown in June in well-drained, moisture-retentive soil. You’ll want to place seedlings around 5cm apart so they have enough space to grow.
"If you’re growing carrots in a container make sure it has enough depth for the carrots to grow. A pot that is around 30cm deep is usually ideal.
" Cucumbers The expert said: "Cucumbers need warm weather, so wait until temperatures are consistently above 12°C. Once planted, water generously. "You’ll also need support for cucumbers if growing vining varieties. This is a great option for those with smaller garden spaces as cucumbers take up little space on the ground.
" Hebe Away from growing vegetables Chris added there were alternatives that could be grown in June. He said hebe was one of them. He added: "This shrub prefers a sunny or partially shaded area in the garden and needs free-draining soil. Since it needs regular watering in hot weather until it’s established, avoid using heavy soil that is prone to water-logging.
" Marigolds "This plant will bloom right through summer and into August, making it a great garden investment," said Chris. He added: "Marigolds need full sun in a sheltered location as they can be damaged by strong winds.
"Opt for well-drained soil and water them regularly until established. After that they’re pretty low maintenance and will just need a deep and thorough watering through dry spells.
" Cosmos Chris finally suggested cosmos which can be a "beautiful and colourful summer addition to gardens" that look great as part of a border. He said: "They prefer well-drained soil and also require warmth and full sun as they will not flower in shade. Water them deeply during any dry spells while they establish, after that the soil should dry completely before watering again.
