The Herald respects readers who will vote No but remains firmly of the view that a Yes on October 14 would deliver better outcomes for Indigenous Australians.
Wednesday was a morning of strange political bedfellows. In Melbourne, former Labor leader Bill Shorten was at Flemington railway station campaigning for the Voice to parliament alongside Greens leader Adam Bandt. In Sydney, former Liberal prime minister Malcolm Turnbull spent hours at Kings Cross spruiking the Yes case with Labor cabinet minister Tanya Plibersek.
Regardless of the result, the referendum in which Australians will be asked to endorse or reject both constitutional recognition of Indigenous Australians and the creation of a new Indigenous advisory body will represent a before-and-after moment in our nation’s history. The stakes are unbelievably high.
One thing nearly everyone can surely agree on, though, is that our current approach to improving the lives of Indigenous Australians is failing miserably.the Voice is bigger than politicians because it is, or should be, about the best way to help some of the most disadvantaged people in Australian society.
