The 27-year-old quit his job and moved to Montreal two years ago to develop an LGBTQI+ video game,He wanted to stay in NSW to work full-time on his passion project, but simply couldn’t afford it. Sydney was just too expensive.“My rent here in Montreal is less than a third of what I would pay in Sydney and the electricity prices are so low that they’re included in the rent. I was even able to rent an office space," Mr Campion told 9Finance.
Mr Campion, originally from Far North Queensland, had considered Vietnam and Taiwan before settling on Canada, which he said “has one of the biggest video game industries in the world”.He said talented young gaming developers are being forced overseas because of Sydney’s rising cost of living pressures.
About 84,700 people formally departed Australia in the last three months of 2017 - 8800 more than in the same period in 2016.Dr Angela Knox, an associate professor at the University of Sydney Business School, said it’s a “rite of passage” for young Australians to work overseas.
