The removal of bigger pieces of plastic from coastlines aids the breakdown of tiny fragments that may have been in the water for years, research suggests.
Its orientation means it acts as a giant funnel, collecting marine plastic swept by ocean currents from as far away as the UK, France and the Netherlands.
But the new research strongly suggests that all is not lost.
