Concerned about the authenticity of some overseas online learning, China is forcing students to return to face-to-face lessons if they want accredited foreign degrees.

While Australian universities are puzzled by the sudden rule change, experts in China say it is no surprise given Xi Jinping’s directive for return the country to pre-pandemic normalcy as soon as possible. China has abolished COVID-19 travel and border restrictions overnight in a bid to reboot the world’s second-largest economy.

Beijing now sees no reason why students cannot return to face-to-face classes in Australia and elsewhere because all pandemic-era border restrictions have been scrapped.China wants to be seen to be re-engaging with the world, which means government officials, business delegations, tourists and students are travelling again after three years of isolation.

The change in policy also reflects the Chinese government’s concern about the authenticity of some online degrees and diplomas. It has accused foreign universities of using the pandemic-era online study allowances as a cash cow. “They use the epidemic as an excuse to continuously launch various online courses, recruit Chinese students aggressively by lowering admission requirements, graduation requirements, or shortening the duration of study, and claim that ‘you can easily obtain overseas diplomas without going abroad’,”
