Ecuador will kick off the World Cup against Qatar but Chile say they have 'compelling evidence' they should be disqualified over a player with false birth certificate. FIFA cleared Ecuador. An appeal is taking place. What will happen? josephmdurso
The South American nation coming fifth could qualify by winning a play-off against a nation from the Asian Football Confederation. However, Peru lost that June play-off toChile had come seventh in the 18-match qualification process, one place behind Colombia.
It points to two separate birth certificates that give the same two parents — the Colombian birth certificate dated 1995 and the Ecuadorian document dated three years later. There are suggestions the irregularity could be explained if the two separate birth certificates indicate brothers, but Chile say there is no evidence the footballer playing for Ecuador has a brother.
After the case was dismissed by FIFA, Ecuadorian FA president Francisco Egas said: “Sports justice has been done, we always knew how to be on the right side. Let’s go, Ecuador!”After Chile lodged their complaint in May, FIFA cleared Ecuador on June 10, saying it was not taking action “after analysing the submissions of all parties concerned and considering all elements brought before it”.
It is understood the Chilean FA is concerned about a possible conflict of interest given the presence of a Qatari on the panel, given the upheaval to that country both as hosts and as Ecuador’s opponents in the first game if the South American country were to be disqualified.
