Some teams might grow frustrated if their head coach considered retirement in back-to-back offseasons. Not the Rams. Not with Sean McVay.
“That is one of the first things you notice, how much he cares,” Staley said. “That’s what draws you to him, because it’s authentic, and it’s all the time. He takes care of his people, whether it’s coaches, players, staff. He’s very loyal to them. He’s fair to them. He creates an environment where you can be your best. He’s not trying to make you into something you’re not, but he’s also going to challenge you because he’s extremely driven.
But that night around dinnertime, with many already cleared out of the Rams’ facility, Coen was putting in extra work by drawing up passing plays for the upcoming installs and second-guessing whether he was doing anything correctly.“He’s kind of talking for a minute,” Coen said, “and just says, ‘Hey man, I want to let you know how great of a job you’re doing. I couldn’t be more happy with having you part of this thing, and you’re doing a great job.
“He authentically cares about people, authentically likes people, authentically wants to get to know them,” Snead said. “Some leaders would maybe have to make a checklist to maybe ‘be relatable.’ That’s not on his checklist. That’s in his DNA. Mom, Dad, God blended it up, and that’s part of his DNA.”He has to impact people in a positive manner, or it would feel like a lost opportunity. And last year, there were surely times when McVay didn’t feel true to himself.
Snead took a wider view of the situation. In an example Snead has used before with McVay, Snead felt his head coach had been constantly running an 800-meter sprint since he took over play-calling duties in Washington in 2015.
