In his book, Fryer outlines the four unhealthy beliefs that are holding many of us back, and provides solutions on how to overcome them. The four categories – Dogmatic Demands, Dramas, I Can’t Copes and Pejorative Put-Downs – all hold us back from achieving the things we want and limit our thought patterns. And when it comes to goal setting, it’s the Dogmatic Demands we place upon ourselves that are really getting in the way, explains Fryer.
“If you tell yourself you have to do this or you have to do that, you’re just going to pile the pressure on and fall at the first hurdle,” he explained toIt’s easy to get uber-focused on the goals we set and treat success as a black and white concept – but that kind of thinking isn’t conducive to actually achieving them, he adds.
2020 goals: splitting up your aspirations into smaller, short-term steps can make them easier to achieve. “Instead of saying ‘I have to achieve these things’ like ‘I have to stop smoking,’ say ‘this is what I would really like to happen, but it doesn’t have to’. If you take the pressure off and you give yourself flexibility you’re more likely to make the right choice to help you achieve that goal.
Fryer also advises setting only one goal at a time in order to give yourself more of a chance at sticking at it.
