As Ireland continue their Six Nations 2024 campaign, fans are wondering why they sing two national anthems before games.

Why do Ireland sing two national anthems before their Six Nations matches? Ireland begin their defence of the Six Nations this weekend, with Simon Easterby set to take charge for the first time against Steve Borthwick’s England in Dublin. Easterby has taken over the reins on an interim basis and has huge shoes to fill stepping in for Andy Farrell, who led Ireland to their second straight title 12 months ago.

There has always been tension regarding the song, with during the Irish War of Independence between 1919 and 1921 it was even dubbed the Sinn Fein anthem. These tensions became even worse in the late 80s, particular when an IRA roadside bomb damaged a car carrying three of the Irish rugby squad travelling from Belfast to Dublin for training . In response to this, a new song was commissioned for the 1995 World Cup in South Africa.
