We live in a time of presentism, where every sporting spectacle we gobble up has to be the greatest ever, but there is evidence to back our apparent arrogance.
A sober viewing of the replay says that yes, the game was full of flaws … but how about those drugs? If great sport can be an intoxicant, that game delivered three hits. As for the grand final, well, it’s subjective. Once we’ve sobered up, we all know that the greatest grand final was 2008*, and the greatest teams, after the incomparable 11-peat Dragons, was of course the Manly sides of 1972-78**, with four premierships in seven years.
