Let’s find ways to ensure everyone gets to go to university if they want to, and stay on to graduate, says a leading vice-chancellor.

Young people could be freed from the burden of huge student debts and industry guaranteed a pipeline of fresh talent if more companies were prepared to cover student loans, says a leading vice-chancellor.

“Companies are falling over each other trying to poach staff, especially engineers, IT specialists and cybersecurity people,” Professor Lloyd said. “Then there are the economics from a student perspective of getting a job versus going to university. If they are deemed independent – living away from home and with no parental support – the maximum they can receive is $280 a week. The cheapest one-bed rental in Adelaide today is $200 a week.”

UniSA also entered the world’s top 50 universities under 50 and is the highest ranked university in Australia for industry income.Professor Lloyd’s own background is telling as to his approach to equity. A bright kid from a working-class family born on the wrong side of the tracks in Dublin, instead of aspiring to the 300-year-old, world-renowned Trinity College Dublin, he enrolled in Dublin City University just around the corner from his home.
