England are facing Spain in the 2023 World Cup final in the same sky blue away kit that they wore against Australia
the famous side led by Bobby Moore – who beat West Germany 4-2 in their red jerseysBut why are Sarina Wiegman’s side in their blue change kit while Spain are in their traditional red?England are not allowed to wear their white kit for the final today because Spain, technically, have been designated as the “home” team.
Given that the fixture is on neutral territory – the 75,000-capacity Stadium Australia in Sydney – the “home” and “away” sides are drawn randomly by Fifa.England’s white home kit features dark blue shorts, the same as their final opponents, and so the Lionesses have been told to wear their sky blue away kits instead.
They will be hoping to replicate the success they had against the Matildas on Wednesday in the same kit, after goals from Ella Toone, Lauren Hemp and Alessia Russo secured a win over the co-hosts.Both teams are playing in their first final, with England having lost back-to-back semis in 2015 and 2019 and Spain having only won one World Cup match before this year.
The Lionesses are unbeaten in the tournament having topped Group D, while Spain were runners-up in Group C following a 4-0 loss to Japan. Regardless of the result, Europe is guaranteed to end its 16-year World Cup drought, with Germany most recently winning in 2007, while it is 20 years since the last final to feature two European nations .
