Watching the show for the first time last autumn, I realised its comforting rituals, perfectly drawn characters and irreverent dialogue were exactly what I needed
. It had, she said, everything I liked – New England in the fall, early-2000s music and a cameo from Norman Mailer. But I had overheard thirtysomething single mumand her teenage daughter Rory’s kooky repartee while my wife was watching it for the fifth or sixth time. It sounded cosy, insufferably American, and I didn’t have time for seven 22-episode seasons of their shtick. But last autumn, after wasting a few evenings failing to hit it off with something new and hyped, I gave in.
A year later, having come to the end, I feel bereft. It is as if I myself have spent the last 12 months living in Stars Hollow, the fictional Connecticut town whereis set, and have now been cast out. It’s a small place but it has everything you need, with a diner, music shop, bookstore and apparently a pancake house that serves Chinese food.
When it comes to her parents, Lorelai’s prickliness reminded me that we often hide our best selves from the people who love us most. Then again, Emily can come off mean in ways that are funny but would be enraging if she were your mother, as when she asked Lorelai: “Do you think you’ll be single your entire life?” The Gilmores are full of contradictions, which makes them relatable, and I could never predict where my sympathies would land.
