A study has shown border collies are the most intellectually gifted dog breed
, but was particularly keen on horse racing. When it was the National Hunt season, he would take his place right in front of the TV, sit upright, and then, when the horses went over the jumps, he would rise on his haunches and go over the fences with them. When the race was over, he’d have a look round the back of the telly to see where all the horses had gone, and then settle back for the football results.
He could do impressive tricks with a ball, would find his favourite soft toy on command, and, as long as he had about eight hours’ exercise a day, he seemed to be no trouble at all. He stopped short of doing the cryptic crossword, but I’m sure that was only because he was no good at anagrams. So it was with something approaching weary foreknowledge that I greeted the news this morning that a two-year research project investigating the cleverness ofconcluded that border collies are the most intellectually gifted. Some of them were able to recall the name of toy they had been given two years earlier. That’s nothing, though.can hear a bag of crisps being opened half a mile away, and knows exactly when it’s breakfast or supper time – within an hour or two, that is.
The question is: do you really want a highly intelligent dog, one which requires constant stimulation, interest and captivating conversation? Of course, you’d like it to be able to understand basic commands and broadly to do what you ask it to. And, especially, not to eat your passport.
