The ceremony – last performed when the Queen ascended to the throne in 1952 – has taken place in front of television cameras for the first time in British history.
The eagle-eyed were able to spot former prime ministers and past and present politicians among those watching the proclamation, including Theresa May, Boris Johnson, Gordon Brown, David Cameron and Tony Blair. Mr Clegg lost his MP’s seat in Sheffield in 2017 and has since joined Facebook as its president of global affairs.
The Privy Council – made up of more than 700 political, judicial and religious figures – confirms Charles as King , and are individuals who hold or have held senior political, judicial or ecclesiastical office in the UK or in Commonwealth Realms.
