Lee Carsley is set to take charge of England for the first time in their Nations League clash against the Republic of Ireland and has addressed whether he will sing the national anthem
Former Everton midfielder Lee Carsley, set to take charge of his first game as England manager this evening, has made it clear he won't be singing 'God Save the King' before kick-off. The interim boss, who represented the Republic of Ireland during his playing career, stressed that his decision is not influenced by his past international allegiances. Carsley pointed out that he never sang the national anthem throughout his playing or coaching days and doesn't plan to start now.
'I was always really focused on the game and my first actions of the game. I really found that in that period I was wary about my mind wandering off. 'I was really focused on the football and I have taken that into coaching. We had the national anthem with the Under 21s also and I am in a zone at that point. 'I am thinking about how the opposition are gonna set up and our first actions within the game. I fully respect both anthems and understand how much they mean to both countries.
