The highly anticipated GTA 6 is expected to launch later this year. While publishers are hoping for a high price tag to recoup development costs, the article argues that GTA 6 Online's continued success makes a $100 price tag unnecessary and potentially detrimental.

The anticipated arrival of GTA 6 later this year—not on PC, of course—has publishers eagerly anticipating its release. With the game’s extensive development costing hundreds of millions of dollars, industry executives worldwide harbor a fervent hope that the new Rockstar title will command a price tag of eighty to one hundred dollars, enabling a swift recouping of costs. However, there exists a possibility that this might not materialize, and frankly, it shouldn't.

The new Grand Theft Auto installment is projected to be among the most expensive games ever developed in the gaming industry. As game development costs continue to escalate, publishers increasingly rely on remakes and remasters like Horizon Zero Dawn to generate additional revenue. They are pinning their hopes on GTA 6 to revitalize their financial standing. After all, the latest Grand Theft Auto installment is anticipated to be the biggest entertainment launch in history, despite only releasing on two consoles. It is poised to drive hardware sales, generate millions of copies sold, and potentially have a profound impact on the future of game pricing. At present, there is no official confirmation that GTA 6 will cost more than the now-traditional $70 retail price point that was established with the launch of the PS5 generation. In fact, there isn't even a concrete release date for the game yet. However, publishers are already adjusting release schedules and maneuvering to avoid any potential overlap with GTA 6's launch, all while hoping the game will command the highest possible price so they can justify similar pricing for their own titles. Publishers urgently need to recognize that not every game is GTA 6. Even if the new open-world crime saga debuts at $100, there is no guarantee that players will be willing to spend the same amount on annual releases like Call of Duty, Assassin's Creed, or even Naughty Dog's next project. Furthermore, there seems to be a prevailing belief that GTA needs to charge a premium price to cover development costs and achieve its astronomical profit margins, which is simply not true. In fact, publisher Take-Two would be well-advised to adopt a different approach.Someone seems to have forgotten about Grand Theft Auto Online. While the base single-player version of GTA V has consistently occupied prominent positions on sales charts since its 2013 release, it is not the primary revenue driver for Take-Two over the past decade-plus. Yes, continued sales of a single game at near full-price for an extended period have undoubtedly generated a substantial amount of revenue for the often-criticized publisher. However, it is the game's GTA Online mode that has been the true cash cow, raking in an unimaginable sum of money that few individuals could ever fathom. Since its release, GTA V has generated over $8 billion in sales of the base game and its Online Shark Cards, the latter of which is undoubtedly returning for the sequel. While hackers claim the new game has cost around $2 billion to develop, analysts predict it will recoup half of that amount from pre-orders alone. With rumors circulating that GTA 6 Online will also launch simultaneously with the base game, complete with microtransaction offerings, Rockstar is well-positioned to generate a profit in its first week of release. GTA Online is Rockstar and Take-Two's golden goose, and it will continue to generate revenue for as long as GTA 6 servers remain active, which is anticipated to be over a decade. Certainly, Rockstar could increase the base game price to $100, but this could potentially result in fewer players engaging with Online, and that is where the true financial windfall lies
