'The dance floor, for many, has long been a space of safety, an alternative zone where you can be with your people, alone in your thoughts but also together' Why I created a disco for grieving people ➡️
It is such a beautiful and powerful thing. The dance floor, for many, has long been a space of safety, an alternative zone where you can be with your people, alone in your thoughts but also together. The Discoteca invites people to shake out their grief, and there is a real catharsis in this.
. The more that time has passed, the more I’m able to look at grief as a much bigger, more unwieldy beast that you have to make friends with, you have to find a way to integrate it because it’s not going anywhere. I’ve been living with it, this sort of sweet, little lodger for a long time, maybe it needs a new name, a more welcoming one. And it’s there whether you invite it in or not, so you may as well try and make space for it – it feels like there’s a bit of freedom now. So much has changed. I have so much more going on in the world of the living now than I did. When everyone died, one of my most invasive fears was the feeling of having lost more people who loved me unconditionally than I had left on earth. This is when terror runs through the body, a deep sense of being unanchored. If you choose to survive, you spend a long time focusing on taking that terror out, grounding yourself and finding reasons to be here, in the living. My sister Sonia died just after her 40th birthday and so I’ve been nervous about approaching this milestone . But there are all these beautiful signs pointing toward life. One of the most difficult things is knowing how to hold those people that I’ve lost with me and take them forward into this new era, how to embrace the now, how to dare to envisage the future. It’s a very tender balance. I will always keep them alive, not just for me, but for the other people I’ve met along the way, for any kids I may have. I had a dream not that long ago that all my living and all my dead were in the same room, meeting at a party. I watched as faces crumpled with the sheer force of emotion at recognising one another after all this time. It’s a dream that will stay with me forever, just as my family will.Grief Raves will be at the Greenbelt Festival 24-27 August. For more information on Annie Frost Nicholson
