I can now see the case for keeping one’s private life private
I noticed that the more evident my vibrant sex life was, the less likely my friends would be to talk to me about their own last week. In fact, it was the first interview with a father which I can remember reading and thinking: “Yep, that is a man who is as equally involved in parenting as the mother of his kids”. But he also got candid – genuinely candid – about his sex life.
Kane and I sing from the same song sheet when it comes to post-parenthood sex. I’ve spoken many times before about the joy of having, and how it’s provided a sense of escape from the monotony of the domestic and a connection to my pre-mummy self. But what I found most interesting about Kane’s interview was his admission that he and his wife “tone it down around our friends and don’t really talk about it because it breeds resentment”.
That internal logic is nonsense, and it’s nonsense which was actively unhelpful to maintaining friendships. I noticed that the more evident my vibrant sex life was, the less likely my friends would be to talk to me about their own.
