Today’s Google Doodle: the accordion We all enjoy a good Google Doodle, but there’s no denying that some days one pops up and you think, ‘huh’? Today was one of those for many when an ornate accordion popped up, flanked by four miniature dancing figures, including a cowboy and Lederhosen-clad chap. Well, it turns out that on this very day in 1829, the accordion was first patented, meaning it has just turned 195.

Boris Karlov? Luis Gonzaga? Clifton Chenier? All accomplished and influential musicians, but neither they nor many other accordion players quite hit the mainstream. Perhaps the most well-known accordion player is the comedian and actor ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic, who often turns to his trusty instrument when parodying popular songs by other musicians. And weirdly, he’s no relation to another famous accordion player, Frankie Yankovic.
