Team Khan aren't so sure the Mayor of London will win again
Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, left, alongside Labour Party leader Sir Keir Starmer Recent polls give the incumbent Mayor a 25-point lead, and he has twice won in London at times when his party was far less popular in the capital than it is now. Khan is running against a Tory rival, in gaffe-prone. London hasn’t elected a Conservative mayor since 2012, when the Tories’ national poll ratings were among the highest they had been in years. Now, they are at their lowest ever.
The claim reflects genuine jitters in Khan’s team that the race could be much closer than anyone expects. They are spooked by the fact that, in 2021, polls suggested he was 25 per cent ahead of his Tory rival Shaun Bailey. In the actual contest, Khan beat Bailey by just 4.7 per cent in the first round of voting. With polls again reporting a huge lead, Labour strategists are taking nothing for granted and are adamant that the race is tighter than the data are suggesting.
While these issues are causing genuine concern among Team Khan, their insistence that their man could lose also has several advantages for his campaign. “Voters aren’t that keen on Khan, so it’s much easier to scare liberal left voters with the Conservatives than to stand on his record.”.
