The renowned university is celebrating 200 years of its contribution to a vibrant creative ecosystem
The importance of creative arts on Greater Manchester's rich cultural tapestry and economic prosperity cannot be understated. Known around the world as a creative, digital and technological city, it contributes significantly to music, literature, art, politics and history.
From its roots of providing design training to support the burgeoning textile industry at its School of Art where there was a skills gap identified for Manchester, it has evolved to support the ever-changing creative landscape but still address the needs of the region and its industry. As a result, it has expanded its academic offerings to encompass courses that includes digital arts - with the new iconic School of Digital Arts purpose-built to address a skills gap in that sector.
Its history traces back to the Manchester Mechanics' Institution, founded in 1824 and the Manchester School of Design founded in 1838. The university also hosts the Manchester School of Art Research Centre which has research hubs in architecture, art, design, fashion, media and performance. Its research in art and design is ranked second in the UK in the Research Excellence Framework which assesses the equity of research across all disciplines in universities in the UK.
As it celebrates 200 years, Manchester Met has reaffirmed its commitment to nurture the next generation of creative leaders, continuing to foster collaboration between it, industry and the community.
