The French horror series 'Marianne', which premiered on Netflix in 2019, has continued to terrify viewers even years after its cancellation. The show's chilling story of a horror writer confronting an evil spirit, coupled with its high production values and strong performances, has earned it widespread critical acclaim and a devoted fanbase. Despite only having one season, 'Marianne' has become a cult classic, with fans constantly praising its scares and calling for a revival. Creator Sam Bodin has even expressed his desire for a three-season arc, leaving many to hope that 'Marianne' will one day return to Netflix.

Netflix viewers have been left terrified by a show many have hailed one of the ‘best horror series’ ever. French horror Marianne arrived on the streaming platform back in 2019, telling the story of horror writer Emma as she goes back to her hometown. The synopsis reads: ‘A famous horror writer who is lured back to her hometown discovers that the evil spirit who plagues her dreams is now wreaking havoc in the real world.

’ Netflix bosses cancelled the programme after just one season, but fans are still finding Marianne years later, as its ranking among the platform’s most popular shows. ‘Just finished watching Marianne on Netflix and it’s the scariest thing I’ve ever watched in my whole f***ing life,’ one fan wrote, as another added: ‘Just finished the first episode of #Netflix’s Marianne and I am scared for my life. Good start!’ ‘Possibly the best horror series I’ve ever seen. I’m about to give it a rewatch,’ wrote one audience reviewer on Rotten Tomatoes, where the series has a 100% rating. Very well written, acted and directed,’ added another fan review, as a third RT user described it as ‘refreshingly good horror and truly creepy at times’. Marianne even has some fans in high places, with horror icon Stephen King heaping praise on the show, and comparing it to Netflix hit Stranger Things. ‘If you’re one of those sickos–like me–who enjoys being scared, MARIANNE (Netflix) will do the job,’ he wrote on X. ‘There are glints of humor that give it a STRANGER THINGS vibe. It also has (I say it with all due modesty) a Stephen King vibe.’ The show left people ‘scared for their lives’ (Picture: Emmanuel Guimier) Others are still disappointed there are no more series in the pipeline after such a strong start. ‘Years later and I’m still so furious this show was cancelled. Really, really well done,’ wrote another fan on RT. ‘Whip smart, funny, stylish touching, unsettling and truly scary. What I wouldn’t give for someone/anyone to give this show the season 2 it so richly deserves.’ The series was originally envisioned as three seasons (Picture: Emmanuel Guimier) They’re not the only ones, as creator Sam Bodin has admitted he had more ideas to span the story across ‘three seasons’. ‘At the time, I really wanted to do three seasons. The story in my head takes three seasons, three acts for me. Three big chapters,’ he told Bloody Disgusting. Marianne is available to stream on Netflix. Got a story?
