Not many of us relish speaking to an accountant – on a professional basis, at least – but Fiona Fernie is the type of numbers woman you definitely don’t want to have to use. The disputes and resolutions partner at Blick Rothenberg, she advises clients who have got into hot water with HM Revenue & Customs.

The vast majority of aggressive tax avoiders are men. Surprised? While HMRC does not hold data on the gender of those it has successfully prosecuted over their taxes, have a look on its website and check see the testosterone imbalance for yourself. “It’s a sweeping generalisation, but I get the impression there are a lot of men who think: I’m sure it will be all right,” she says. “More women seem anxious about being compliant. Quite a lot of the men will think, ‘It’s bound to be OK’, whereas a lot of women are thinking: ‘What if it does happen to me and what’s the outcome?’ ”
