I have taught women & gender studies at Oregon State University since 1996, including a course on gender, race & sports. Before this, I taught religious studies for 8 years at liberal arts colleges. I’ve served on OSU’s athletics committee and was the Faculty Athletics Representative at one of the liberal arts colleges.

during the second half against guard Laila Phelia #5 of the Michigan Wolverines at Carver-Hawkeye Arena on February 15, 2024 in Iowa City, Iowa. NCAA women’s basketball is having a moment, long lines snaking around arenas just so fans can watch Iowa’s Caitlin Clark’s dazzling play, sellout crowds, South Carolina about to break its own attendance record, and a growing schedule of much-watched games televised on major networks.

Sports fans—and many folks who aren’t—know the names of Clark, Watkins, and LSU’s Angel Reese. Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer passed longtime Duke men’s basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski to become the winningest coach in college basketball history.

As people have become more interested, networks have begun to air more games, so watching women’s basketball on TV is easier than ever. Also, social media have allowed players to grow their fan base.
